ARTISTS WE LOVE: Edward Hopper
WHO: Edward Hopper
WHAT: Painter/Printmaker
WHERE: New York
WHEN: July 22, 1882 – May 15, 1967
FAMOUS FOR: Nighthawks (1942), focusing on the interactions between people and their environments, Automat (1927), Office in a Small City (1953), and not being very fond of talking about his art (“The whole answer is there on the canvas”). Edward thrived more than other artists during the Great Depression, selling works to the Whitney Museum of American Art (where he later bequeathed his and his wife’s art collection) and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
No amount of skillful invention can replace the essential element of imagination.
