Five Favorites from Art Basel Miami 2019
The beginning of December was an absolute whirlwind for us as our team descended on Miami to check out what is arguably the best contemporary art fair in America, Art Basel Miami. This incredible art event takes place every first week in December and if you haven’t heard about it before, this is definitely one art experience to put on your to-do list.
Spread out over several days in and around South Beach, Art Basel hosts the artwork of nearly 4,000 artists from over 200 art galleries around the world. It’s nothing short of overwhelming to try to squeeze in all of the exhibits and events that take place throughout the week, but even just being there is a fantastical feeling for any true art lover. Here were five of our favorite things from Art Basel 2019 and why we cannot wait to be there again next year.
SCOPE Art Show
SCOPE Art Show is the main contemporary art fair which features both emerging artists and younger galleries. Set just on Miami Beach, there is something simply spectacular about checking out some of the art world’s biggest rising stars just steps from the ocean.
Public Art Installations
One of the best things about Art Basel Miami is that the whole city really turns it up – both behind gallery walls and in public spaces. This year the most-talked about installation was “Order of Importance” by Leandro Erlich, an installation artist from Argentina, in which he created a 66 life-sized sand car traffic jam just off Collins Road.
Just down the street from Scope was Design Miami/, an inspiring design forum where collectors and enthusiasts alike come to view cutting edge furniture, jewelry and other décor. This is a show that will quickly remind you that furniture and jewelry can be wonderful works of (functional) art, too.
We’d be lying if we didn’t stay Miami also turns it up big time when it comes to parties for the entire week of Art Basel. One practically needs a professional party assistant to keep track of what is when and who is where. We were honored to have been invited to several amazing gatherings, including the Gucci party held in Miami Fashion District where none other than the legendary Iggy Pop came out to perform a few favorite songs.
The crowd at Art Basel is nothing short of miraculous and highly eclectic which is why we had to include people-watching as our last highlight. Literally all walks of life come together from elite art collectors to fashionable Club Kids who all have one single thing in common: a passion for art in some form or another.
We are already looking forward to Art Basel Miami 2020 – drop a comment if you plan to be there, too!
